Health Information Services are hospital-based systems that are made to manage medical, administrative, financial and legal aspects of the hospital.  The systems are currently in a state of huge transition, because of the broad-based acceptance, essentially, that digital is better than paper.
Information technology is currently being developed to be used by physicians and hospitals to more effectively diagnose and treat diseases, with the aid of computer based analysis of Big Data.  The administrative, financial aspects are undergoing change, to, hopefully, make the system more streamlined, consistent, and efficient..

VA Hospitals Blaze the Path of Bar-Coding Medicatons

Already, advantages are being seen with the digitization of Health Information Services.  One prime example is the widespread incorporating of “Bar-Coding” of medication.  This application first was brought into widespread hospital use in the Veterans Adminstration hospitals of the USA, and its success is prompting this system as a future state-of-the-art for medication dispensing in hospitals.  Medication errrors, which cause much injury and even death, has been severely decreased. The scope of services needed to be brought into the Digital Age in hospitals is so fragmented and diverse, that hospitals currently use an outside, third-party service to do end-to-end revamping.  Companies that specialize in such services, to name a few, are Cerner, Epic, , and McKeeson.
See this video to explain the services offered by Cerner

This approach by Hospitals is better than a scattershot approach, by hiring independent, or in house IT teams to change each department’s IT needs.  There is more cohesiveness, and more efficient interdepartmental communication when done by one IT team.
