Advanced Signal Processing Algorithms to Diagnose Parkinsonism

Max Little, a PhD sound  and biomedical engineer working out of the MIT Media Lab, has developed a non-invasive way to accurately (99%!) diagnose dysphonic disorders, such as Parkinsonism, through an allgorithm used by a device as simple as a Smartphone.  He is yet another example of the migration of great minds of other technologies migrating to use their minds in Internet Medicine, and applying brain matter to improve Medicine.

Specialized Stroke Ambulance  with Portable CT Machine


In Germany, an ambulance designated for stroke victims is being developed, which as both a portable CT, as well as on site lab facilities, to allow rapid adminstration of clot-busting meds, if indicated.

NeuroVigil’s iBrain Device


The La Jolla based  iBrain Device  involves the famous physicist Stephen Hawking, who has ALS, and communicates only through cheek twitches.  Scientists are  mapping Brain waves associated with thought-intended actions, and mapping them.  This technology, which is years away from any type of application, is seen as having a possible use in neurodegenerative diseases, and determining the effect of drugs on the brain.

How researchers hacked into Stephen Hawking’s brain

The system, developed by San Diego-based NeuroVigil  called “iBrain”  utilizes a headband with a receiver to pick up varying brain waves, and uses an  computer algorithm called SPEARS to analyze the brain emanations and encode them for a text-based speech reader.

Smartphone Being Researched as Brain Scanner

At the University of Denmark, research is being conducted on using a Smartphone with specialized progamming and a headset to do brain scans! The system provides “a fully portable EEG based real-time functional brain scanner including stimulus delivery, data acquisition, logging, brain state decoding and 3D activity visualization.”
