The versatile ole iPhone is used to, not only view the inner ear with magnification, but also take pictures, to send to doctors, or specialists, from home or remote areas.  It is approved by the FDA.  This is yet another use

of the iPhone as a periperal device useful in Internet Medicine.

This technology started with the Cellscope, which aids in looking at tympanic membranes in tykes, but now is being used to scan skin lesions all done with an iPhone, and an iPhone peripheral.

Accurately Estimates Lung Air Volume

iPhones will soon take the place of the spirometer.  At the University of Washington Medical Center, an iPhone App has been developed to make an algorithm with the audio portion of an expiration, and there is a 5% difference in studies performed, compared against the ole spirometer.

Enhanced Skin Permeability Makes Transdermal Drug Delivery Easier 

MIT Researchers are fine-tuning the technology of drug absorption, through the skin, after skin is prepped with ultrasound.  May lead to possibility of giving IM injections through transdermals methods.  Pediatricians offices would LOVE this eventuality to occur.  See the below video by a biomedical engineer, which explains this unusual technology

Also, two other technologies are being explored, including Laser Jet, and Fermentation as alternative to IM drug injection, so much attention is  being paid to this area of medicine.

Non-invasive Glucose Monitoring

Of course, the Killer App of this decade will be the discovery of a non-invasive Glucose Monitoring device.  There is research in many labs, in all types of technologies, to get to this goal  This particular monitor, from the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, utilizes a micro-biosensor, that essentially measures the serum glucose in sweat.  See the below photo to see it small size.


Now, do you want to know the power of miniturization, and the digitalization? This tiny device contains:
1) a potentiostat to measure electrochemical signals
2) an integrated analog-digital converter that converts the signals into digital data
3) a wireless system that can send and receive data between the sensor and a mobile device
This sensor is powered by the sensor, and it theorized that it could be automated with an insulin pump, to automatically give the appropriate dose of insulin, through an insulin pump. WOW!

Medica Launches EasyCell Assistant Hematology Cell Image Analyzer

Remember the fever work-ups while taking the Internal Medicine rotation?  Blood, urine, and sputum gram-stains, etc?  Well, here’s a device that would have made that fire-drill more interesting for the med student at 3 a.m. during the fever workup.
This analyzer, as pictured below, presents the cells on the computer screen, and algorithmically analyzes them.  Now, go back to sleep, students!
