AIRSTRIP TECHNOLOGY: FIRST BIG MEDICAL APP OR APPLICATION
This page will not deal with the AirStrip Technology itself, with costs, careers, stock, competitors and revenue; for that info, go to AirStripTech website. What is interesting about tihis ground-breaking app is the story.
The story of the development of this company shows the true value of collaboration, and the overall tremendous value of the power of the Internet in Medicine in establishing a benchmark in the field of remote moitoring.
Cameron Powell, MD, son of a Texas oilman, and trained as an obstetrician, understood the challenges faced by treating and monitoring expectant mothers. He collaborated with Trey Moore, a web developer from his church in Texas, and came up with an idea to transmit info from the pregnant moms to their doctors by wireless means from remote locations. Together, they formed a medical software company, Air Strip Technologies in about 2005. First, they developed AirStrip OB, which remotely monitors fetal heart rhthyms, and communicates the waveform wireless, through a server in the hospital to the doctor. Next, they developed AirStrip Cardiology, which transmit waveforms of cardiac patients. Then, AirSrip ICU, which does the same with ICU, CCU, ER, telemetry patients.
Now, the company is firmly established, connnected, and funded, all programs FDA approved, and HIPPA compliant. HCA, one of the largest Hospital Corporations in America, is extensively using the IT and AirStrip Technology for many of their on-staff doctors. The doctors are given codes to get into the hospital-based server of AirStrip Technology, located in the IT system of that particular hospital. And, the doctor simply logs onto the server, and is able to examine the various waveforms of their patients, remotely.
This technology is a tremendous benefit to patients, because it assures them that the doctor, although he cannot be physically be present at all times, at least is monitoring them remotely. And it benefits the doctor access to vital information, so he can process the data, and triage any potential problems that may arise.
To show that the AirStrip Technology is firmly established, they are backed by perhaps the premier Venture Capital Companies, Sequoia Capital, and, more recently in 2012, Qualcomm.
