IT is now closely integrated with a large variety of fields like finance and banking, construction, education, healthcare, etc. However, its role can be sometimes overestimated. Many people believe that a medical application installed on their smartphones can become a panacea to all diseases and conditions they suffer from, and this is a big mistake. But when people come to a hospital, they face another problem: an admitting department is crowded with other patients since efficient patient flow management is a common problem for all healthcare organizations.

    Admitting departments often operate at above capacity, and their staff is usually emotionally overwhelmed and burdened. As a consequence, opportunities for an error increase, while patient safety and patient satisfaction decrease.

    IT could become a remedy in this case by developing smooth communication between a healthcare organization and patients. However, there is no comprehensive IT solution available that has high efficiency and does not requires long hours of training of a medical staff and does not result in time and money losses for hospital management. Existing solutions are difficult to handle and they do not make communication between patients and healthcare professionals easier.

    The question is: how can be an IT solution providing efficient communication between end-users (patients) and a healthcare institution created?

    The solutions must be a filter that transforms information obtained from a patient by using a common language and visual means into the medical history with basic symptoms included. Patients can provide reliable information, but a means of getting it represents a very important problem.

    A very first stage of such projects is creation of a detailed case study: we consult with a customer to gain in-depth understanding of its needs. Our experts insightfully investigate interaction between healthcare professionals and patients at all stages. The first contact and initial collection of information form the most important and labor-intensive task requiring much time and sources from the medical staff. This stage cannot be easily automated due to a number of reasons.

    To begin with, end-users usually do not have sufficient technical and medical skills and it may be difficult for them to interact with some computer interface. Elderly people and children also make up a significant percentage of patients, and if the first ones can have eye problems and little experience in using modern devices, the second ones are too small to have reading skills. Personal data (like passport details and an insurance status) requiring verification and protection is one more obstacle developers have to deal with.

    Therefore, development of human-friendly UI/UI for primary surveying of patients represent a big challenge for experts and developers.

    However, all efforts and time spent on the project will be paid off to the full extent due to efficiency growth and reduction of operating costs. Firstly, hospitals save time as healthcare professionals do not have to spend much time reading handwriting of patients or interviewing them. Secondly, the solutions assist in cutting costs: when they are used, a smaller number of staff are needed to control a patient flow and human sources can be reallocated or even reduced. Besides, usage of IT solutions assists in improving patient engagement.
