• Why Medical Science Research is important to the future of healthcare

    From its earliest beginnings, research has been an integral part of medical science, and today, utilizing research to find new treatments and solutions for healthcare has never been more important. The effects of scientific research on medicine and healthcare practice in the US, and around the world, are both immediate and far-reaching. As technology becomes more and more important to healthcare practice, and as our world becomes smaller in many ways, the future of healthcare will be found in the labs and analysis of medical scientists.

    Better treating cancer

    Analyzing the genome of cancer tumors, doctors can now determine what types of treatment, such as chemotherapy, that a cancer will be most susceptible to. If the cancer does not respond at all to any current treatments, then the information from the genome analysis can help doctors jump directly to an available clinical trial that may yield positive results and save the patient’s life.

    Another cancer treatment innovation allows doctors to target the cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. Medications such as Iburtinib block the protein Bruton’s tyrosine kinases (BTK), which is instrumental in the growth of leukemia and lymphoma cells, while Abraxane combines two drugs, creating a compound that helps chemotherapy drugs target melanoma cells.

    Reversing Damage to the Body with Stem Cells

    Stem cell research, though controversial in some context, offers a wealth of information and opportunity for healthcare breakthroughs. Scientists have found that stem cells that are introduced into an area of the body that is diseased or damaged can stimulate the body to repair or replace the cells that have lost their ability to function. This can open the potential for improved and restored function. The ability to collect and store stem cells for future use has improved greatly, offering parents the chance to store their own children’s stem cells in a cord blood or tooth cell bank, both for future use if needed.

    Technology and the Future of Healthcare

    Technology has afforded medical science the ability to help hundreds of thousands of people, easing their pain, correcting crippling abnormalities and improving their quality of life. Machines such as pacemakers offer you the ability to live well with conditions that might otherwise cause pain, suffering and even death.

    One of the newest developments is the bionic eye, which uses implants and wireless technology to transmit video signal images. This technology could soon give people who suffer from retina pigmentosa and macular degeneration, which afflicts more than 1.75 million people every year, the ability to see again.

    The NeuroPace utilizes a system of electrical sensors that work like a defibrillator for the brain, offering hundreds of thousands of epileptics the chance to reduce the risk of seizures by half after the first two years of use.

    Medical science continues to explore and expand, uncovering new medications, new treatments and new technologies that promise to help people with chronic illnesses, debilitating diseases and conditions. Smart cancer drugs and treatments, stem cells rejuvenation, and computer and wireless advancements all hold the promise of even more leaps forward in healthcare in the future.
